Copper Roof Cleaning Processes

Removing Dirt and Debris

Leaves and dust accumulate on the roof over time. Hence, you can use a soft-bristled push broom to clean the specks of dirt, dust, and fallen leaves along with any types of debris on the roof.

You cannot prevent the accumulation of dust and other debris. However,  you can prevent the gathering of fallen leaves on the roof. You should trim the branches of trees hanging above your rooftop.

A soft-bristled push broom is to be used because it does not scratch the copper surface.

Scrape up Bird Droppings

Bird droppings on a roof are an inevitable occurrence. Bird droppings contain acid which can corrode a copper roof. That is not something you’ll want. So, The best course of action would be scraping up those bird droppings.

You need to take a wooden or plastic spatula to scrape up the bird droppings. After scraping them up, use a damp cotton cloth to wipe up the rest of the bird droppings.

Rinsing The Roof with Distilled Water

You can clean your roof by rinsing it with distilled water. Be sure to use distilled water because it does not contain any minerals. Otherwise, the minerals present in water can end up harming the copper roof.

After rinsing off the roof, Dry it off with clean rags in a circular motion. That way streaks and marks will not form when the water dries.

Using Chemical Based Cleaners

You can use various chemical cleaners to clean your roof. However, they will cost you a lot of money.  Here are the processes:

  • You have to take a soft flannel cloth and apply the chemicals in a thick layer.
  • After that, let it dry under direct sunlight for about six hours, preferably overnight.
  • A layer of white powder will form on the roof.
  • Clean those residues with a soft-bristle brush or flannel cloth.
  • Following that, you have to apply a coating of polyurethane over your roof.

Using Natural Cleaners

There are two types of natural cleaners. One is a lemon juice-based cleaner while the other is an all-purpose flour-based cleaner. Preparing the cleaners is easy.

For lemon juice-based cleaner:

  • Mix three parts of lemon juice with one part of salt and vinegar in a bucket.
  • Stir until all of the salt has dissolved.

For all-purpose flour-based cleaner:

  • Combine 5 cups of all-purpose flour and 1.5 tablespoons of salt in a bucket. After that, pour some vinegar and mix the solution until all the materials are well incorporated.

After preparing the cleaner, test a small portion on the roof with a non-metallic brush. If there is no adverse effect on your roof, you may proceed to the next step.

Apply the cleaner in an even layer on the whole roof. The acid in the cleaner will pick up any impurities on the roof. If you notice any impurities not coming off, use some more vinegar in your solution.

After application of the cleaner, let it dry for some time, at least 15 minutes. After that, rinse your roof with distilled water to remove the cleaning solution. Take a dry flannel cloth and clean the roof to remove any stains or water streaks. You should work in circular motions to get the best result.

There is another way to remove the cleaner. Take a cloth or sponge dampened with distilled water. Scrub the paste off the roof using it.
