How To Shingle A Shed Style Roof?

Shingles are the simplest method to keep your roof dry. They act as a weather barrier, protecting your roof, its infrastructure, and its components. So, it’s you who can have the credit, if the installation process goes well.

Before starting the shingling process you must wear safety measures. After that there will be some steps like removing the old roofing components, attaching new roofing paper, and so on.

Here we’ll explain all the steps in the rest of the article. Keep reading.

Safety First

As you need to work on the roof, you have to take proper safety measures.

  • Stay focused and don’t let anything else get in the way. Any distraction might result in a serious accident. It’s best to wear the right shoe for the job to keep you stable on the roof.
  • In the time of using nails and hammer, wear hand gloves.
  • Use a safety belt system and a body harness.

Step 1: Remove the Olden Roofing Materials

This step is required for shingling an old shed. To put a new shingle on an old roof, it’s better to remove the old one.

  • Work with a fork to loosen the edges of the old roofing materials and then, remove them with a shovel.
  • After pulling on the old one, ensure that you clean the surroundings and dump the aged materials properly.

Step 2: Attach Roofing Paper

Before shingles are installed, roofing paper serves as a foundation for the roof. If the shingling is totally for a new roof, skip the first step and put the roofing paper on the roof directly.

Step 3: Cut The Shingles In Proper Size

Shingles size depends on the roof’s size. So, first, measure the size of the roof. And, then cut the shingles according to that size.

Step 4: Start To Laying Shingles

Start from the bottom of the roof. It’s because you must properly position nails in the bottom row. So, the following row can support the top edge of the lower row and provide the roof form.

Additionally, insert the nails just above cuts and label the cutouts at which tab joins the upper portion of the shingles. Use an air compressor so that shingles can’t be smashed by nails.

Step 5: Layer Of The First Row

Using chalk, draw a line across the first row. The size of the shingles of the first row is different from the other row’s shingles. After, sorting the first row, fasten them in their places with nails.

Step 6: Lay Every Other Row

The Starter row and first row are a little critical. Once you have done those, rest is too easy to be done.

To place the shingles horizontally, draw lines with chalk. As you do so, make sure the foot of the next tabs hits the head of the shingles beneath. The goal is to ensure that there is no gap between shingles and your roof is adequately protected from the elements.

Step 7: Vent And Chimney Covering

Complete the layering of shingles by covering the vent and the chimneys. Cover them with the non-corroding flashing of a metal base. Flashing can be of aluminum layers or cemented layers.

Step 8: Finishing Touch

Apply Adhesive on the final row so that you can get a stronghold. Then, use regular shingles or ridge-cap shingles on the top.

Also, try to arrange them out starting at one end and working your way to the other.
